    Hi Kirsty,

A few things I have discovered which may help.

    1. If you know you want to create several entries with the same anchor, use the drop down arrow at the top right of the text window to select ‚adopt previous anchor‘

    2. If you are coming back to an anchor already used, select the word, select ‚adopt previous anchor‘ as above, then cancel the entry. Enter your new wording and create the entry – it will attach to the previous anchor.

    3. I have found that once you close Index-Manager (even without exporting) and then re-open, you can select an anchor again and it does not open the old entry for updating.

    Hope that makes some sense!

    Hi Jan,

    Yes, Katharina told me to use \;

I had tried this, and thought it didn’t work because the index preview seems to still treat it as a sort instruction. But it does come out right in the Word index!

The problem seems to have been that I also had an entry for ’neoliberalism‘ – i.e. without the hyphen. Once I put a hyphen into that, all the entries merged correctly.

Why the presence or absence of a hyphen in one entry should affect the others, I have no idea – but at least it works.

    Hi Janice,

    Thanks for the quick response.

It still doesn’t address the particular issue of repeated ’see‘ cross-references, though obviously I can edit them afterwards. I just wondered if there was a way to suppress them in the first place, as one can if using WordEmbed.

Thanks, Jan. I would be interested to see your guidelines.

I’m not necessarily wanting a different solution – I’ve used RDs successfully in the past. But I thought Jan Wright had found an easier alternative, so I was interested. But perhaps I misunderstood.

I’m about to embark on a commission where the publisher wants separate chapter files, so I wanted to check I knew all the options.

Thank you, Katharina and Janice for your thoughts.

Katharina – you have reminded me that James Lamb (author of WordEmbed) advised that one should initially open the Word file using ‚open and repair‘ before working on it. I had forgotten this, but it might be another thing to try.

Jan – I haven’t worked out at what point the index entries end up in the middle of words, but I know I have tried correcting them sometimes and they’ve looked OK, but later they revert to being inside the word. (I’ve been trying to experiment to get a better grasp of what goes wrong and when, but am now having trouble replicating the problems!)

I’m working in Word, not InDesign.

It seems to be happening with Word files that I have created myself (I have Word 2010). I haven’t (yet) replicated the problem with a file from another source.

Thank you – that is helpful to know.

It doesn’t really explain why some headings are affected and others not, when they have all been created the same way in the Word file (for example, by selecting text and applying ‚Heading 2‘ from the Styles group on the tool bar.) Is there something odd going on in Word itself?

I’m interested in the relationship between styles in Word and Structure in Index-Manager because the last project I had was beautifully styled in Word, with a clear structure in the navigation panel of the document, but in Index-Manager it had no structure at all – or at least, the whole book was in a single section. This wasn’t helpful for navigation! So it started me wondering about whether I could apply styles myself that would be recognized in Index-Manager.

The structure window is a really useful feature of Index-Manager, so I’m keen to find ways to make it work for me.

    With best wishes,
    Wendy

As a follow up to this, I’ve now discovered that the headings which are ‚greyed out‘ in the structure window, although they appear normal in the Text window, cannot be selected to form index entries. Strange!

    Best wishes,
    Wendy
